A dry local mix will outperform green redgum for tonight’s fire. A dry redgum will outperform dry local mix for long coals. Buy dryness first, then pick the hardwood tier that matches your budget.

- How can I tell if firewood is seasoned?
- Seasoned splits are lighter for their size, show checking/cracks on the ends, make a clearer sound when knocked together, and light with less smoke. Moisture meters on split faces are the clearest proof.
- Is cheap green wood worth it?
- Usually not for heating now. You pay to cart water, fight to light it, and get less heat into the room. Buy seasoned when you need the fire this week.
